We are running and fundraising on the behalf of a local patient of St. Jude, Avalyn! Please read her story below and help us reach our goal.
Avalyn began to exhibit symptoms in late March of 2017. On April, 23,2017 she woke up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. We began frequent trips to the peditrician. We ended up in the ER were we admitted and sent home with a diagnois of serum sickness and/or juvenile arthritis. After a few weeks, we realized that was not the case. Avalyn stopped walking completely, refused to eat, constantly ran fever, and sweat profusely. We went back to ER. We were finally transported to St. Jude on a Friday. On Saturday, June 23,2017 we got the news that Avalyn had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). We started down the road no one wants to travel; but by Sept of 2017 she was considered in remission.
She has to undergo two and a half years of treatment, divived into three phases. The first phase was six weeks, and she recieved instense, high doses of chemo almost everyday. She also underwent several lumbar punctures. The second phase was weight weeks, where every other week she recieved high dose steriods every four weeks for 101 of those weeks. We are currently in week 105. Also, throughout the course of treatment, she has had physical thereapy and occupational therapy to help her catch up from the deficits that cancer has caused. She has now gradutaed from both!
God willing she will recieve her LAST chemotherapy on Jan 8, 2020! Because of St. Jude this type of cancer has gone from slime-to-none chance of survival to 94% survival rate. Avalyn is well on her way to becoming part of that 94%!
